Main character energy chamber music
Join us on a vibrant musical journey across Europe.
We begin in the Czech lands with Bedřich Smetana’s dramatic piano trio, a powerful work in three movements where the music shifts between urgency, tenderness, and dramatic intensity. The three musicians each bring their own strong voice to the stage, and you will witness a certain main character energy.
Some may know Smetana from his famous symphonic poem The Moldau, which traces the river’s journey through the Bohemian landscape. The same sense of longing, pride, and beauty flows through his piano trio. It’s music that invites the mind to wander.
From there we travel to Paris and the music of Francis Poulenc. Poulenc – whose opera Dialogues des Carmélites was performed at the Copenhagen Opera earlier this year. Poulenc’s musical personality is full of contrasts. His music can be witty, playful, and sharply ironic, yet suddenly lyrical.
Poulenc was part of Les Six, a group of young French composers who emerged after the First World War. They wanted something new: music that felt clearer, lighter, and more direct than the lush romanticism of Richard Wagner or the dreamy sound world of Claude Debussy.
We end the evening with the piano quintet by the Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz – a gripping and intense work that deserves to be heard far more often. Piano quintets by composers like Dvořák and Schumann are among the most beloved in the chamber music repertoire, and for good reason. But Bacewicz’s quintet is something of a hidden gem.
We want to share this piece with you, and we hope you will enjoy and cherish it just as much as we do!
